Rudraksha

Rudraksha is synonymous with Lord Shiva. Rudr-aksha, as the name goes, denotes the eyes(aksha) of Lord Rudra (Shiva). Rudrakshas are used for chanting mantras as beads or as in malas (garlands) made of these beads. They are also used in jewellery and as accessories.

Rudrakshas are very highly regarded spiritually and valuable in chanting mantras, and are also financially valuable, not so cheap. A Rudraksha is an asset apart, valued; and the suitability to different persons and occasions is determined by the number of Mukh (faces) it has.

The Rudrakshas are recognised as having a specific number of faces.  Each face is separated by a visible groovy line along the stone. These stones can have any number of faces between 1 to 21. Single face (ek mukhi) Rudrakshas are very rarely found, those having 4 to 6 faces are very common.

Rudraksha stones are strung together into garlands using threads of silk, cotton, copper, silver or gold. The garlands are used in prayers and meditations, to cleanse the mind of evil thoughts, to concentrate and purify body, mind and soul. Mostly, the garland is made up of 108 beads and one more Meru at the head which facilitates the completion of repetition and beginning of 108 recitations of mantras or names.
